Day 11 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

I am doing 50 pushups a day for August 2023. My goal is to do 50 pushups in a single set. Today I reached a new record of 41 pushups in a single set and got up to 61 pushups total.

Unfortunately, my camera was not recording for the second set so you will have to take my word for it on the total, but I got the 41 in one set recorded!

At 12:04 I feel the LOVE!

Day 10 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

My goal is to do 50 pushups in a single set. I am doing 50 pushups a day for August 2023. I reached a new record of 36 pushups in a single set.

In this video, I also delve into more of the preparation I am doing to be able to continuously do 50 pushups a day without taking a day off for repair.

Day 9 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

My goal is to do 50 pushups in a single set. I am doing 50 pushups a day for August 2023. I reached a new record of 32 pushups in a single set.

In this video, I also delve into more of the preparation I am doing to be able to continuously do 50 pushups a day without taking a day off for repair.

Ice Baths

I have been taking ice baths every day after my pushups. Today I added all of the ice I had prepared. I hope it got down close to 10 degrees Celsius but I didn’t take a temperature. Previously I have only stayed in the ice bath for 4 minutes, but today I did the full 15 minutes of the cold plunge

Breathwork

In the video, I share that in between sets I have been doing some simple breathwork.

Breathe in for 4 counts. Hold for 4 counts and exhale for 4 counts. Normally you would hold for 4 after you exhale but I am finding that skipping that is beneficial to load more oxygen into my system. In the video I call this a “very calm hyperventilating,” and it has helped me do more pushups in my second set.

50 Push-Ups in 2 Sets!

I have a goal to do 50 pushups in one set by the end of August. Today is the first day I have done 50 pushups in only 2 sets. You can see in the video that I am pretty excited about this.

How Am I Preparing?

I have had trouble doing the 50 pushups a day in less than 3 sets this first week. Before today, I had been eating a ketogenic diet focused on cutting out carbohydrates. I have been focused on using ketones (energy from fats) as my fuel source, or in other words burning fat instead of carbs. That has helped me shed extra weight and I can feel that I have a more consistent energy source.

I have noticed that now that I am working out more I am having trouble performing. I ate a small bowl of oatmeal this morning with ground flax seed in it and then I was able to do 30 pushups in my first set and also 50 pushups in 2 sets. Moving forward I plan to eat carbohydrates 1 or 2 hours before a workout.

I have also had benefits from intermittent fasting, or not eating for 16 to 20 hours a day. I will have to find a way to maybe eat dinner earlier because I like working out first thing in the morning. Previously I was skipping breakfast but that was also not supporting this additional exercise.

Day 6 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

I did these pushups yesterday but am not printing the video until today. It is day 6 of my challenge where I do 50 pushups a day for 30 days. My goal is to get down to a single set of 50 pushups, but I am stuck at 3 sets right now with the first at 23 reps being the largest set.

At the end of this session, I did some yoga. I mostly did a backward handstand to stretch out my back. I also did some downward dog and child pose and then rolled up to the mountain pose.

The night before I stayed out late to see WEEN while they were in St. Louis. The show was amazing and I am glad I stayed out late to see it. I am putting together some video I captured on my phone and can post that next. I decided to spend time with my family yesterday, Sunday. I worked a lot in the yard and placed some large sandstone rocks in the garden. I couldn’t pick two of them up and had to roll them around. They were very heavy so I ate some extra protein yesterday. I can post some pictures of the final project.

Then the family watched the new Super Mario Brothers movie with Jack Black as Bowser. We all really enjoyed it and it was a perfect family movie night with slow-fried salmon and fresh veggies.

Day 5 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

Day 5 of my 50 pushups a day challenge fundraiser for St. Jude was Rough after 3 beers last night.

I accidentally call it Faint Jude in this video, probably a Freudian slip because I am feeling faint. On Friday night I start my cheat day and last night I had 3 beers. A Heineken and two Micilob Ultras. I am really feeling that today and it really reinforces why I don’t drink much alcohol, if any, anymore.

Day 02 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

I am attempting to do 50 push-ups a day for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. I ramped up my repetitions while we were traveling through Thailand but I am still struggling. I am currently doing 4 sets in 30 minutes to get to 50 pushups a day. My goal by the end of August is to be able to do 50 pushups in a single set.

Day 2 was not pretty. I was not feeling it.

Day 01 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

My yearlong quest to be consistently something is continuing. Having a word for the year is really working out for me. I have resolved to be consistently growing or improving at something. It has also worked to do one thing consistently for a month. So, 30 days with no alcohol basically led to me not drinking anymore. A month of sugar-free led to not eating sugar, but now I just focus on eating more fiber than sugar and only eat processed sugar on cheat days (Saturday).

Last month I was consistently in Thailand for July. That experience could fill 100 blog posts, but here I will just share that the mindset of Thailand is that of accepting things as they are, not always improving. Even though that does not directly align with my word of the year, I found this mindset to still be beneficial to me; even when you want to improve you still need to be happy and accept where you are today. (*I moved to Thailand right after my bachelor’s degree and lived there for 7 lucky years.) But by Thai methods, it would have been 9 years to be lucky…

This month I am doing 50 push-ups a day. It was a total struggle but I made it through day 1.

Look at my face, I am terrified!

30-Day 3D Model Challenge 17/30

Day 17 – Creating a Wheel

Learning From Failed Goals

In this video, I discuss how I am refining my approach to being consistent. I am no longer focused on consistently posting on my blog daily but instead consistently minding my priorities and waiting until I have time to create a higher-quality post.

Back to the Basics

I am glad I decided to backpedal from trying to export Adobe Substance Modler files into Adobe Substance Painter and just focus on getting better at Modeler. I like how this more advanced tutorial made use of the boolean functionality, symmetry, and repetition. This video also showed some simple yet creative ways to quickly create dynamic shapes only using the clay and erase tool.

Day 16 – Pause and Pivot

Pause and Pivot

When it feels like you are getting nowhere and are not getting the results you want, you need to look for the things that are working out. You can pause, reevaluate your given circumstances, and tweak your approach.

Over the past three posts, I have been staring at a brick wall. Some Adobe Substance Painter introduction videos caught my eye and I thought I’d like to learn how to work with that application next. However, I have had some issues finding a way to export a file from Adobe Modeler to Adobe Painter. I have read content and watched videos that suggest you should be able to do that, but I just can’t seem to get it to work.

Focus on What is Working

Identify the positive results that you have had and then focus on those.

So, as I was viewing the files that I exported from Adobe Substance Modler (OBJ, FBX) I noticed that those files were associated with Adobe Substance Stager. Sure enough, when I double-clicked on them they opened in Adobe Stager. The Ocean Volcano Diorama I built came up small and that discouraged me. However, I took a breath paused, and stepped away and when I went to bed last night I asked myself what could my next step be. When I woke up the answer was provided by my subconscious. Look at what you can do in Stager because that is where your files are working. In addition to that I had another idea. I have by no means mastered working in Adobe Substance Modeler and I enjoy working in that. So after I look at how things are opening in Stager and get comfortable with how layers carry over, I could go back and do more advanced builds in Adobe Substance Modeler.

I feel like this second option is my path with heart.

Have you ever heard that phrase? Follow the path with heart? It is something my friends at University used to say. It comes from The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge.

I read this series at a formative time in my life and it had a big impact on how I view learning and knowledge in general. There is a very big emphasis in these books on finding the path with heart or choosing the path that will best serve you. In other words, be clear about what you want to accomplish and then give it your all. Yesterday I made fun of Using the Power of Your Subconscious mind because it sounds like a Pseudoscience book that tells you to take drugs and align your Chakras. (I have nothing against the concept of Chakras, I can do a separate post on those if there is any interest in that.) At any rate, my point is that this book (The Don Juan one) IS about Carlos Castenada’s experiences consuming hallucinogenic Peyote cacti in the deserts of Central America. So, as much as I like these books and enjoy the teachings and perspectives they provide, they are not far from new-age pseudoscience.

Now, for the record I never ate Payote, nor have I taken any mescaline, but the author, Carlos Castaneda did. According to the books, he also drove his car to Central America and spent time with the Brujo, Native American Shamans, or Sorcerers. He spent a good deal of time recording their practices. Although many criticize the books for not being true anthropology, they are still a very interesting read and provide colorful insight into the perspectives and traditions of that part of the world.

OK, so back to why I brought that book up at all. A person of knowledge will follow the path with heart. They will pursue what interests them above all other things. A person of knowledge understands that people don’t learn from hearing other people explain something. If you want to learn about something there is no replacement for first-hand experience. Do you see what I did there? I took some crazy new-age hippy novel written by a charming man who was on cactus, mushrooms, and all sorts of trippy datura roots and I made this about learning, I made it about how to improve yourself. Get out there and try something new. I am not recommending drugs, I am recommending experiences. (Not necessarily drug-related experiences.)
