Day 20 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

I went to a birthday party for my 2-year-old nephew today. He wasn’t sure what was going on but his parents wanted a Barbie & Ken-themed party. I found some clothes at the local discount retailer called Marshals, where my brother used to work. It was a good time.

I am doing 50 pushups a day for August 2023. My goal is to do 50 pushups in a single set. So far I have made it to what I call the faux 50, where technically I do 50 pushups without resting but my form is sub-par. Today I backpedaled and did two higher-quality sets of 25 pushups, for only 50 quality pushups in total! I think this is the best approach overall to be able to do a real set of 50 by the end of August.

I did a 5-minute breath work session between the two sets but failed to hit the record button. I am sorry for that. It was a standard breathwork session where I breathed in for 4, hold for 4, and breathed out for 4.

Day 17 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

I am doing 50 pushups a day for August 2023. My goal is to do 50 pushups in a single set. Today I repeated the goal of 50 pushups in a single set, but took it down to 55 pushups in total! I stated in the video that I took the total down to 55 today so I could go shovel 2 square yards of dirt into my yard, but when I got to the composting site their loader was down. I will do that first thing in the morning.

I made a joke yesterday about getting to 55 pushups. I spent 7 years teaching in Thailand and one thing I learned is that when people text they don’t type HAHAHA they type 555+ because the number 5 is pronounced HA! So I speak some Thai at the end of this video thanking my viewers and asking for donations. LOL!

I have now promised two times that I am reducing my pushup count because I am getting 2 yards (~5,000 lbs to 6,000 lbs) of soil and throwing it in my yard. So, today I did that and wanted to include that experience in my video to hold myself accountable. The woman told me she would not load the dirt into my trailer because it had rained two days ago. I asked her to do it anyway and she said no. She suggested I drive “20 minutes south” to the other location, but that location is more than 20 minutes away.

Then I drove away and went and looked at the dirt which was not that wet because it rained just a bit two days ago. I went back and nicely asked her to just load me anyway and she said no again. Then the loader in the shipping container office said, “I’ll load him if he wants.” I said, “Yes that is what I want.” This is not what I would call great customer service, but at least they loaded me in the end. I had not seen her before so I would guess she is new.

At the end of the video, I have a helper shoveling the dirt with me.

We got it done by the end of the day, but we ran out of time for our sister to do My Little Pony Yoga with Cosmic Kids Yoga. Promises were made to do that yoga session over the weekend.

Day 15 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

I am doing 50 pushups a day for August 2023. My goal is to do 50 pushups in a single set. Today I reached that goal of 50 pushups in a single set, and got up to 85 pushups in total!

I had some help counting today. My daughter wanted to go late to school, well that changes to stay home from school in the video, to “watch my do pushups” but then she had a conflict because she wanted to watch Bluey more. I can’t say I blame her there.

In this video, I mention the metabolic age as determined by the VO2 max test. I have not taken this test but I would be curious to find out what my metabolic age is as opposed to my biological age. I joke in the video that I saw another participant in this challenge doing pushups very quickly and I joke that his metabolic age is probably like 12. More on that topic here:

50 Push-Ups in 2 Sets!

I have a goal to do 50 pushups in one set by the end of August. Today is the first day I have done 50 pushups in only 2 sets. You can see in the video that I am pretty excited about this.

How Am I Preparing?

I have had trouble doing the 50 pushups a day in less than 3 sets this first week. Before today, I had been eating a ketogenic diet focused on cutting out carbohydrates. I have been focused on using ketones (energy from fats) as my fuel source, or in other words burning fat instead of carbs. That has helped me shed extra weight and I can feel that I have a more consistent energy source.

I have noticed that now that I am working out more I am having trouble performing. I ate a small bowl of oatmeal this morning with ground flax seed in it and then I was able to do 30 pushups in my first set and also 50 pushups in 2 sets. Moving forward I plan to eat carbohydrates 1 or 2 hours before a workout.

I have also had benefits from intermittent fasting, or not eating for 16 to 20 hours a day. I will have to find a way to maybe eat dinner earlier because I like working out first thing in the morning. Previously I was skipping breakfast but that was also not supporting this additional exercise.

Day 5 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

Day 5 of my 50 pushups a day challenge fundraiser for St. Jude was Rough after 3 beers last night.

I accidentally call it Faint Jude in this video, probably a Freudian slip because I am feeling faint. On Friday night I start my cheat day and last night I had 3 beers. A Heineken and two Micilob Ultras. I am really feeling that today and it really reinforces why I don’t drink much alcohol, if any, anymore.

Day 4 – 30 Pushups in one set

Today I continued to fail at being able to do 50 pushups in a single set. I was able to keep it down to 3 sets from 4. I also picked better music and had the idea to draw that above after a hot magnesium sulfate bath.

Day 03 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

I am doing 50 pushups a day for August 2023. Today, I set a daily goal to get down into 3 sets instead of 4 sets.
This caused me to make some anguished facial expressions, but I made it down to 3 sets!

I did 50 pushups in 3 sets in under 15 minutes! Check out the video!

Day 02 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

I am attempting to do 50 push-ups a day for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. I ramped up my repetitions while we were traveling through Thailand but I am still struggling. I am currently doing 4 sets in 30 minutes to get to 50 pushups a day. My goal by the end of August is to be able to do 50 pushups in a single set.

Day 2 was not pretty. I was not feeling it.

Day 01 – Push-Ups for St. Jude

My yearlong quest to be consistently something is continuing. Having a word for the year is really working out for me. I have resolved to be consistently growing or improving at something. It has also worked to do one thing consistently for a month. So, 30 days with no alcohol basically led to me not drinking anymore. A month of sugar-free led to not eating sugar, but now I just focus on eating more fiber than sugar and only eat processed sugar on cheat days (Saturday).

Last month I was consistently in Thailand for July. That experience could fill 100 blog posts, but here I will just share that the mindset of Thailand is that of accepting things as they are, not always improving. Even though that does not directly align with my word of the year, I found this mindset to still be beneficial to me; even when you want to improve you still need to be happy and accept where you are today. (*I moved to Thailand right after my bachelor’s degree and lived there for 7 lucky years.) But by Thai methods, it would have been 9 years to be lucky…

This month I am doing 50 push-ups a day. It was a total struggle but I made it through day 1.
